AFTER-SCHOOL LITERACY TUTOR (ASEP)
Tenacity is a non-profit organization providing after-school programs for at-risk middle school youth in Boston.Our programs offer academic enrichment, life skills development, and tennis instruction.Our approach is that strong relationships between tutors and students are the key to the success of the program.
Volunteer/Work Study Job Description:
We are looking for tutors/mentors for our literacy blocks.Tutors will work with 1-3 students, getting to know them, engaging in literacy activities and helping students with homework.There is a steady need and we would prefer that tutors commit to an entire semester or an entire school year but anytime that you have to offer would be greatly appreciated. We are currently specifically looking for tutors with experience working with students with learning disabilities and English language learners. This is a volunteer position unless tutors have work study funding. Tutors are also encouraged to work with Tenacity to fulfill a course requirement.
Time Commitment:
We would prefer that tutors commit to at least 1.5 hours a week.We operate programs M-F at five different sites in Boston. Times for Literacy block vary from location to location so please refer to you desired location below for more specifics. We prefer that Tutors commit to at least one session a week for the duration of a semester.Entire school-year commitment is highly encouraged.
What Kind of Training and Supervision is Provided?
All tutors receive a full day of literacy, tutoring, and behavior management training at the beginning of each semester, as additional follow-up trainings as necessary.An Academic Coordinator, who runs and supervises the literacy block, is on-site at all times.The Academic Coordinator is available to answer questions, work with difficult students, and provide guidance and support to tutors.The Academic Coordinator also regularly checks in with tutors via email/telephone.

1. Washington Irving Middle School, 105 Cummins Highway Roslindale.Literacy Block takes place on Monday-Thursday from 2:00-4:30
2. McCormack Middle School, 315 Mt. Vernon St., Dorchester.Street parking is available in. The JFK/Umass redline T-stop is only one block away. Literacy Block takes place on Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30-6:00.
3. Harvard University Gordon Center, JFK Street, Brighton.Street and visitor parking limited.Ten minutes from Harvard Square T stop on Red Line, directly on the #66 bus route. Literacy Block runs from 1:45-5:00 Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
4. Mario Umana Middlle School Academy, 312 Border Street, East Boston. Parking available in lot, take blue line to Maverick Station and 116 or 117 bus to the school. Literacy Block runs from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.-5:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
5. Frederick Pilot Middle School, 279 Columbia Road, Dorchester. Parking available in lot, on the #16 and #19 bus routes. Literacy Block runs from 4:00-6:00 on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
