VOICES OF TENACITY

Fatumata Kaba
ASEP Alumni, Class of 2007

During my three years at Tenacity, my family, friends and teachers have seen a huge change in me. My love for reading has expanded and I love tennis with a passion. During my time as a participant in the Tenacity After School Excellence Program (ASEP), the most important and helpful advice I received was during my eighth grade year. I was guided through the process of choosing a high school and I needed to make the best choice that I could possibly make. This choice would determine my future. Tenacity helped me get into my current school, Beacon Academy. It’s a 14-month enrichment school year that will help me get into a private high school next year. Without Tenacity I would have never been aware of all the positive aspects of Beacon. Now I will be able to attend a high school that I would have never dreamed of attending.

Tenacity has definitely made a huge impact in my life and I’m glad that I decided to join. It’s a place where you don’t have to be afraid to love reading or just being yourself. Everyone is gregarious and very social. They plan field trips that will help build character and your intellect. The field trips that I enjoyed were hiking, ice skating at the Frog Pond and camping trips that included kids from all the various ASEP program sites. The site leaders were really helpful and they wanted to inform me about everything. For example, every morning Sara, my academic coordinator, would try to write “Good Morning” in a different language, just to inform everyone about all the different languages the world has to offer. Tenacity has taught me many lessons without really letting me know they were, but by allowing me to figure it out myself and essentially allowing me to teach myself.
